With over twenty years of experience in her combined areas of practice, Ms. Atzberger brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding to the unique needs of your case. Ms. Atzberger was the supervising attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland's Education Law Unit for several years. During her time at Legal Aid, she represented families with children in suspension and expulsion hearings, negotiations for IEP and 504 Plans for students with disabilities, due process complaints with the Ohio Department of Education, and lawsuits filed with Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights.

She started her career as an Assistant Public Defender in Cuyahoga County where she represented juveniles in delinquency proceedings and adults in criminal felony complaints. She has handled hundreds of cases and successfully defended clients charged with the most serious offenses. Her expertise in this area includes handling sex offense charges and juvenile transfer or "bindover" proceedings to adult court.

 

Later, she became the senior staff attorney for the ACLU of Ohio where she worked to educate and protect the public and clients against civil rights violations. She represented students whose rights had been violated by schools districts in cases ranging from failure to provide special education services, sex discrimination, free speech violations, and bullying. She also filed a writ of prohibition with the Ohio Supreme Court that led to a rule change banning the indiscriminate shackling of children in juvenile courts in Ohio.
